He followed Bucky's gaze to the bench and his shoulders stiffened slightly under his best friend's touch. Steve pressed his lips together, his brow darkening as he took in the oldest kid who couldn't have been more than ten years old.
He knew what Bucky was doing, but there was no flash of resentment as he looked back at him. Just pure determination as he threw it back at him.
"On second thought, if you're too chicken to ride it on your own..." He didn't bother finishing the sentence as he moved towards the ride line.

It was supposed to be the greatest thrill ever. Said so in the pamphlet and in the shouts rolling from caller to caller. Try your luck, three balls a dime. Everyone's a winner, every time.
Sure, it was all showmanship, but it worked. It had Bucky all the more determined, and he had succeeded. Steve was riding with him. They were both going to have a good time. And if they didn't, which he didn't currently believe possible, he would make it up to Steve, later. Save up every single extra penny and take him to that new picture coming out.
"Really cutting me at the knees."
It was his only real reply. Any wrong word now and he could still lose him, but they were getting on this ride if it was the last thing he did. He could feel bad about it later.

There was also the undeniable part where Bucky's sense of adventure was contagious. It always was. Steve had even halfway talked himself into believing Bucky when he said it would be fun by the time they had gotten to the front of the line.
The ride operator looked at Steve and then Bucky. "You sure about this, kid?"
Steve felt his face warm, but he looked the man in the eye. "Yeah, I am."

Instead he ignored the operator and gave Steve a grin and a squeeze on the shoulder. He was making Steve ride this ride, the least he could do was let him pick the seats. So while Bucky was all geared up to ride in the front row, he let Steve go first so he could choose.
He did think they would both enjoy it, but it wouldn't be the first time he was wrong about that. Steve wasn't wrong that not all of Bucky's ideas were great.
"No turning back now. We're in this together."

Steve wasn't showy, but he did feel like he had something to prove. Not only to them, but to himself. He sat back in the steel seat, glancing around as the cars behind them filled up.
He glanced over at Bucky. "This isn't payback for ditching you and the Wilson twins last week, is it?"

Not if he could have his best friend beside him.
"Now why would I do a thing like that?"
Completely innocent. Don't be ridiculous Steve. This is all about the thrill of the ride. And getting the looks off the faces of those assholes watching his friend like he's some kind of punk kid.
"You might want to hang on to something."
Okay, now that was payback.

The box they were in began climbing, rising up and up in front of them and already Steve got the distinct impression that this had been a bad idea.
He looked over at Bucky who was grinning like the maniac he was. Up ahead the rail dropped and Steve tried to prepare himself for the fall, his hands tightening around the bar until his knuckles turned white.
He leaned towards Bucky to tell him something, but a moment later they were dropping and his breath, stomach and any coherent thought were left behind as they shot downwards and forward.
People were screaming, cheering and throwing up their arms as they moved through the curves, the world alternately rising and falling beneath them. Steve felt light headed, maybe even a little giddy as they went from one exhilarating turn into the other. Somewhere along the way, one of his hands had moved from the bar to Bucky's forearm. Whether or not to steady himself or ensure Bucky didn't fall out was unclear.
As the ride came to a slow and then a stop, Steve's breath finally caught back up with him. He let out a small laugh, smiling back at his best friend. "That wasn't so bad."
And then his stomach caught up with him. Steve scrambled out of the seat and to the fence, not quite making it before getting sick. Right on the passing shoes of two girls exiting the ride.

Before they could say another word he was tugging out his handkerchief with a bright flash of a smile.
"Sorry, ladies, I guess the twelfth time around was just a bit much for the both of us. Here, let me help you with that."
He jumped the fence, chatting the two girls up and of course only Bucky would manage to charm a pair of dames after having their shoes puked on. He managed to not only get them more or less cleaned off, but convince the girls that it was much too warm for shoes, and really, it was summer, they should all be barefoot. But hear, let him just find a couple pairs of flip flops, and so what if it happened to be his last quarter. He would find a way to get by.
He threw his arm around Steve when he sent them off, pulling a piece of bazooka bubble gum out of his pocket, and shoving it into his best friend's hand without a sideways glance.
"What a ride. Want to go again?"
Sorry about your best friend, Steve.

Bucky threw his arm around Steve and Steve closed his eyes briefly, his fingers closing around the offered gum automatically.
He snapped his eyes open, groaning as he ducked out from underneath Bucky's arm.
"Not a chance."
He shoves the gum into his mouth and starts walking towards the front gate.
